Objective To investigate serum fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) levels in obese subjects and its clinical significance. Methods Fifty obese subjects (BMI ≥28 kg/m2) and fifty normal controls(BMI 〈 24 kg/m2) were recruited. Fasting serum FGF-21 levels were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The anthropometric parameters, glucose, lipids, insulin and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were also measured. Results Serum FGF-21 levels were significantly higher in obese subjects than those in controls (P〈0.05 ). Fasting serum FGF-21 was positively correlated with waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), fasting plasma glucose ( FPG), HbAlc, fasting insulin (FINS), triglyceride (TG) and hs-CRP; negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein in cholesterol (HDL-C). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that increased waist circumference, elevated FPG and triglycerides were independent risk factors for increased serum FGF-21. Conclusion Serum FGF-21 level may be of value in prediction of metabolic syndrome.
