Objective To analyze the correlation of serum phosphorus level with calf circumference(CC) and prognosis of critically ill patients in emergency intensive care unit(EICU). Methods Eighty eight critically ill patients admitted in EICU in Tongji Hospital, Tongji University, from August 2014 to August 2015 were enrolled. The serum phosphorus levels were determined, CC as the indicator of nutritional status was measured, and the length of stay in EICU, hospital costs and mortality rate were recorded. According to phosphorus levels patients were divided into normal serum phosphate group and hypophosphatemia group. The correlation of serum phosphorus levels with CC, length of stay in EICU and hospital costs was analyzed. Results There were significant differences in CC levels, length of EICU stay and hospital costs between normal serum phosphate group and hypophosphatemia group(P<0.05). Serum phosphate levels were positively correlated with CC levels(r=0.218,P=0.041), and negatively correlated with the length of EICU stay(r=-0.339,P=0.001), while it was not correlated with medical costs and mortality rate(r=-0.132,P=0.220;r=-0.062,P=0.563). Conclusion The phosphorus levels in critically ill patients are positively correlated with nutritional status and negatively correlated the length of EICU stay.
