Abstract:
Objective To investigate the expression of HMGA2 protein in colon cancer and its clinical significance. MethodsHMGA2 expression was detected by immunohistochemistry in 114 samples of cancer tissues and 45 samples of pericancerous colon tissues from patients with colon cancer treated from May 2011 to December 2012. The correlation of HMGA2 expression with clinicopathological features of patients was analyzed. ResultsThe expression rate of HMGA2 in tumor tissues (89.5%,102/114) was significant higher than that in pericancerous tissues (6.7%,3/45) (P<0.001). There was no correlation of HMGA2 expression with age, sex, tumor size, and tumor invasion depth in colon cancer. HMGA2 expression was significantly correlated with histologic grade(P<0.001), lymph node metastasis (P<0.001), distant metastasis (P<0.001)and TNM stage (P<0.014). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed significant difference in survival rates between groups with high and low HMGA2 expression (44.6% vs.75.0%, χ2=5.736, P=0.017). ConclusionExpression of HMGA2 may be involved in the invasiveness of colon cancer playing an important role in tumor development and progression. HMGA2 expression might be a useful marker of poor prognosis in colon cancer.
