Abstract: |
Biliary tree stem cells(BTSCs) are stem cells located in peribiliary glands on the bile ductal wall. These multipotent stem cells have potentials of differentiation into mature hepatocytes, cholangiocytes and pancreatic endocrine cells. Therefore, they might be used as candidate cell types for treating liver injury and diabetes. This review summaries the biological features of BTSCs, focusing on the embryonic development and anatomical features of the biliary tree and its related tissues, the lineage distribution of BTSCs, cell isolation and purification, in vitro expansion, and in vivo transplantation of BTSCs; and also discusses the prospects of their application in the regeneration of liver and pancreas. |
